World Press Freedom Day

May 3rd is World Press Freedom Day, a day to recognize and advocate for the important and crucial principles of press freedom and its impact o our civic spaces and defend the media from attacks on their independence.
Press freedom is a critical component of a democratic society as it facilitates the free flow of information, promotes accountability and transparency, and empowers citizens to make informed decisions. Journalists across the world play a crucial role in holding governments, businesses, and individuals accountable, and their work often uncovers wrongdoing and injustice that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Unfortunately, press freedom is under threat in many parts of the MENA region. Journalists in countries across the MENA face censorship, intimidation, harassment, and violence and often targeted by governments, and other entities for their work
In the past years, there have been numerous examples of the dangers faced by journalists in the MENA region. The murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the imprisonment of Egyptian journalist Mahmoud Hussein, and the ongoing harassment of many journalists
On this World Press Freedom Day, it is important to remember that press freedom is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of democracy.  to support and protect journalists in the MENA region

As citizens, civil society organizations, and activists, we can play a role in promoting press freedom in the MENA region by calling out those who seek to undermine their independence.
