Empowering Women Human Rights Defenders through Digital Security

In July and August of 2023, an impactful initiative unfolded in Iraq and Yemen, addressing the critical need for Human Rights Defender (HRD) protection and digital security. Innovation for Change MENA and The Gulf Centre for Human Rights collaborated to organize an Online Digital Security Training specifically tailored for Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) in these regions.

The training, facilitated by the highly experienced Marwa Azelmat of the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), unfolded through a comprehensive curriculum consisting of seven videos and corresponding live sessions on Zoom. Delving into vital topics such as rethinking the relationship with technology, digital security fundamentals, safe online advocacy, privacy, anonymity, encryption, technical support, online gender-based violence and laws, and a comprehensive exploration of hacking and artificial intelligence.

The impact of this initiative transcends the boundaries of conventional training programs. Participants, representing the diverse landscape of WHRDs in Yemen and Iraq, expressed profound gratitude for the personalized, one-on-one sessions with Marwa Azelmat. These sessions proved invaluable, particularly in the areas of protection, digitalization, and discussions surrounding feminism and digital safety for women.

One participant shared, “The one-on-one sessions have added to my experience. I have derived significant value from the expertise of the trainer, particularly in the areas of protection, digitalization, and discussions surrounding feminism and digital safety for women which directly affects me and the work I do.”

Beyond theoretical knowledge, the practical application of the training has been a game-changer. The WHRDs have not only gained insights into international agreements pertaining to cybercrime for academic research but have also received hands-on support in setting up the tools shared during the group sessions.

The overarching goal of the training was to enhance the digital security skills and knowledge of WHRDs, preparing them to protect themselves against digital threats and online harassment. The unique challenges faced by WHRDs in Yemen and Iraq, ranging from online threats to the hacking or blocking of their accounts, were effectively addressed through the provision of resources and direct support.

These WHRDs, committed to their essential work in promoting human rights, are now equipped with the necessary tools to navigate the digital landscape safely. The initiative serves as a beacon of empowerment, enabling these defenders to continue their crucial work without fear of online threats, ensuring that their voices resonate and their advocacy efforts thrive in the ever-evolving digital world. The collaboration between GCHR, I4C MENA, and Marwa Azelmat stands as a testament to the transformative impact that targeted digital security training can have on empowering women in the field of human rights.
